Why Secret Very Strong Teeth
Dental enamel which is equivalent to the glass is the material strong, but fragile. However, if the fragility of teeth compared with the broken glass, teeth have a stronger resistance.
The proof, although the teeth used to chew constantly, but in reality our teeth become stronger every day.
The researchers likened this ability with microstructure such as "wicker basket" contained in the enamel of human teeth.
"This is still a mystery, how could such strong teeth," said Brian Lawn of the National Institute of Standards and Technology was quoted by the Times of India, Wednesday (04/15/2009).
In this study, researchers took samples of human teeth, a beaver, and several other animal teeth. Then treat the tooth is like a piece of iron and practicing scenarios like biting movements.
Lawn explains, this study aims to determine how strong your teeth can last before it becomes damaged.
The team found that the micro structure shaped like a "wicker basket" was arrested on tooth enamel cracks formed and potentially destructive and spreads to the entire surface of the tooth.
"These findings explain, why when the dentist checked my teeth of adults, they can know if the tooth is there are many cracks. And teeth are still intact," said Lawn.
Enamel thickness and tooth size may also affect how strong the teeth can chew food.
This study was also useful for anthropologists. Because they can use as reference information about the study of enamel dental evolution in primates and other animals in general.
Enamel structure can also be utilized to develop a similar substance, as well as for replacement dentures.
