This is a warning to women who have a large waist circumference. Compared to other women, women's waist width, regardless of weight, is more likely to die prematurely from heart disease and cancer.
Thus the results of U.S. studies reported in the medical journal Circulation Straits Times daily reported yesterday, Wednesday (04/23/2008).
In this latest study, by researchers at the National Institutes of Health and Harvard Medical School found that middle-aged woman with a paunchy waist line of 89 centimeters or more, is likely to die from heart disease or cancer.
The researchers examined about 44 thousand U.S. women over 16 years. It turns out they are excessive belly fat ditimbuni two times more likely to die from heart attacks than women who waist circumference less than 71 centimeters.
For deaths from cancer, women have a large waist 63 percent higher risk than women who slimmer waist.
The results of this study emphasize the importance of maintaining the slenderness of the body during middle age.
"Although maintaining a healthy weight should continue to be done as prevention of chronic disease and early death. But just as important to maintain a healthy waist size and prevent abdominal obesity," said research leader Dr. Zhang Cuilin.
Excess abdominal fat is considered unhealthy because of its effects on metabolism. Too much fat in the abdominal area will improve cholesterol levels, which can lead to heart disease and certain cancers.
