Prevent HIV/ AIDS

HIV Prevention – New Approaches Used to Prevent HIV/AIDS. Researchers, particularly those in Africa, are always looking for ways to prevent and cure HIV/AIDS. New research has shown that there are films, rings, and tablets that could help prevent HIV infection in women. There’s also hope that the same methods will help prevent the spread and infection of AIDS in men as well.

The methods used in the prevention study include dissolving tablets, rings, and films that are inserted into the vagina and then release AIDS medication. These are called microbicides.

The study on the microbicides were done in petri dishes, and it was noted that only when the HIV virus was present in the dish first did drug resistant HIV develop. This shows that only those who use the microbicides after they are infected have the risk of developing drug resistant strains of the ailment.

OF course these microbicides aren’t on the market just yet. There still have to be clinical trials before the FDA will approve a a course of treatment. Many of these provisional treatments haven’t been tried in humans yet.
